Best Time to Visit Wuxi: Seasonal Weather & What to Wear

Wuxi (無錫), located in Jiangsu Province, China, enjoys a temperate monsoon climate with four distinct seasons. The annual average temperature is around 16°C, ranging from near 0°C in winter to highs of about 33°C in summer.

Spring (March–May) sees temperatures gradually climb from 9°C to 28°C, though frequent rain means an umbrella is always essential. Summer (June–August) is hot and humid, with July and August peaking at 33°C and heavy rainfall concentrated during the June rainy season. Autumn (September–November) is clear and pleasant — the best time to visit. Winter (December–February) brings temperatures close to freezing with occasional snowfall, requiring thorough cold-weather preparation.

Seasonal Weather in Wuxi

Spring (March – May)

Spring is a beautiful season in Wuxi as temperatures gradually rise from 9°C to a high of 28°C and flowers bloom in full color. Early March can still feel chilly, but warmth picks up in April, and by May daytime temperatures reach a near-summer 28°C. Rain falls frequently throughout spring — especially in April when precipitation increases significantly — so always carry an umbrella. The temperature gap between morning and evening is considerable, meaning you may need a light jacket at dawn and dusk while being comfortable in short sleeves by midday.

Summer (June – August)

Summer is the hottest and most humid season in Wuxi, with temperatures ranging from 23°C to 33°C. June marks the start of the Meiyu (plum rain) season, bringing a sharp rise in rainfall, and July records the highest chance of precipitation at 51% — the peak of the entire year. July and August frequently exceed 33°C, and the high humidity pushes the feels-like temperature even higher. Short sleeves, shorts, a hat, and sunscreen are essential, and a dual-purpose sun-and-rain umbrella is strongly recommended. Stay well hydrated throughout the season.

Autumn (September – November)

Autumn is widely regarded as the best season to visit Wuxi. September still carries some summer warmth at 20°C–31°C, but October brings comfortable temperatures of 15°C–26°C with plenty of sunny days. By November the mercury dips to 9°C–20°C and the city is painted in spectacular autumn foliage. Rainfall is significantly lower than in summer, making it ideal for outdoor sightseeing — but the temperature swings between morning and evening remain significant, so a light jacket is still a must.

Winter (December – February)

Winter temperatures drop to 2°C–14°C, and around mid-January — the coldest point of the year — lows can dip below 0°C. Snow is possible, and the damp cold typical of southern China makes the feels-like temperature considerably lower than the actual reading. December has the lowest chance of rain at just 18%, but full cold-weather gear — a heavy coat, scarf, and gloves — is absolutely necessary. Note that indoor heating in this region may not be as robust as in other countries, so staying warm inside is just as important as outside.

Best Time to Visit Wuxi

The best times to visit Wuxi are spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November).

April and May stand out as the top spring window. Temperatures of 10°C–28°C are mild and inviting, and the area around Lake Taihu and its parks bursts into bloom. March is perfect for visiting Wuxi’s famous plum blossom park, while April and May offer hands-on seasonal experiences like bamboo-shoot picking and tea harvesting. Keep an umbrella handy as spring showers are common.

September through November is the second golden window and the one most frequently recommended by travel experts. Skies are high and clear, temperatures sit at a comfortable 15°C–26°C, and the summer heat and rainy season are both firmly behind you. From October into November, the foliage turns stunning shades of red and gold along the shores of Lake Taihu and in the quiet water-town villages nearby.

On the other hand, summer (June–August) is best avoided for outdoor sightseeing due to intense heat and concentrated monsoon rainfall. Winter (December–February) is the off-season, with damp cold and low temperatures requiring thorough preparation.
