Zurich has a temperate oceanic climate (Cfb) with warm summers and four distinct seasons, with an annual average temperature of around 9.3°C. Temperatures range from -3°C to 25°C throughout the year — January is the coldest month, with average lows of -2°C and highs of 3°C, while July is the warmest, with average lows of 14°C and highs of 24°C.

The warm season runs from late May to early September (approximately 3 months), while the cold season lasts from mid-November to early March (roughly 3.6 months). Annual precipitation is approximately 1,134mm, spread fairly evenly throughout the year, with rain or snow falling on around 134 days annually — so an umbrella is essential no matter when you visit.

Zurich’s Weather by Season

Spring (March–May)

Temperatures gradually rise in spring, averaging 3–10°C in March, 6–16°C in April, and 10–18°C in May. During March and April, lingering winter cold and large daily temperature swings make layering your clothing the smartest approach. By May, the weather turns genuinely warm, the shores of Lake Zurich burst into bloom, and outdoor activities pick up — though rain falls on average 8–10 days per month, so a waterproof jacket is a must. Spring sits just before peak tourist season, meaning accommodation is cheaper and the city is noticeably less crowded.

Summer (June–August)

Summer in Zurich is comfortably warm, averaging 15–24°C — mild and pleasant, making it the best overall time to visit. In June, morning and evening lows hover around 12–13°C while afternoon highs reach 22–24°C, so a T-shirt works well during the day but a light cardigan or long-sleeve layer is helpful at dusk. Locals flock to the Limmat River for swimming and cruise Lake Zurich by boat, and outdoor cafes and riverside bathing facilities (Badis) are at their liveliest. Be aware that July and August bring brief afternoon showers roughly every two to three days, so always carry an umbrella even in summer. The Alpine sun is intense, making sunglasses and sunscreen non-negotiable.

Autumn (September–November)

September stays mild with daytime highs around 19°C and is still great for outdoor activities, but from October temperatures drop sharply to an average of 10–15°C. The parks along Lake Zurich and the Uetliberg hill are draped in golden foliage, making autumn perfect for photography and hiking — and October actually delivers around 15 sunny days, more than visitors might expect. By November, the cold sets in earnest: fog becomes frequent, humidity rises, and early snowfall is possible, so a heavy coat and waterproof shoes are essential. Outside trade fair periods, crowds are thin, making it a relaxed time to experience the city like a local.

Winter (December–February)

Winter in Zurich is the coldest time of year, with average temperatures between -2°C and 4°C and frequent snowfall. December is a magical month: Christmas markets open across the Old Town and the city sparkles with festive illuminations. January and February are the most bitterly cold months — average lows reach -2°C and wind chill can make it feel considerably colder, so a full set of winter gear (heavy parka, insulated boots, gloves, scarf) is absolutely necessary. On the upside, Zurich’s proximity to the Alps makes winter an excellent time for skiing — several ski resorts are just 1–2 hours away by train from Zurich Hauptbahnhof.

Best Time to Visit Zurich

May through September is the best overall window to visit Zurich, with June through August offering the finest weather of the year. Average temperatures of 15–24°C bring clear, sunny days ideal for swimming in Lake Zurich, cycling along the Limmat, and hiking on the Uetliberg. Days are longest during this period, maximising sightseeing time — but accommodation is at its most expensive and demand is highest, so book hotels 2–3 months in advance.

April–May and September–October are excellent shoulder-season alternatives when the weather is pleasant and the crowds are noticeably thinner. Spring sees the riverbanks and lakeshores of Zurich explode with blossoms, while autumn paints the city in warm golden tones — both periods are especially photogenic. April can still bring chilly days and frequent rain, so a waterproof jacket and layered outfits are essential; from October onward, temperatures fall quickly.

December through February is the coldest and quietest period, but for visitors who love Christmas atmosphere it is utterly unmissable. The Old Town’s Christmas markets, glowing illuminations, and snow-dusted streets create a deeply romantic setting, and accommodation rates are at their lowest. Winter sports enthusiasts will also appreciate the easy access to nearby ski resorts.

January and November offer the lowest prices of the year — many museums offer free admission on specific days, and hotel rates are at rock bottom. These months suit budget-conscious travellers who want to soak up Zurich’s culture without the crowds. Just note that November is frequently foggy and overcast, while January is simply very cold, so thorough winter preparation is a must.

Monthly Weather & What to Wear

January

The coldest month of the year, with average lows of -2°C and highs of 3°C. Snow is common and there are around 15 precipitation days per month. Wear: Heavy down parka, insulated winter boots, gloves, scarf, and a warm hat. Hand warmers are a worthwhile addition.

February

Still very cold, with average lows of -2°C and highs of 6°C. Expect a mix of snow and rain, with occasional strong winds. Wear: Heavy down jacket, waterproof insulated boots, gloves, scarf, and a chunky knit sweater.

March

A transitional month between winter and spring, averaging 1°C at night and 10°C during the day. Weather is unpredictable — cold winds and overcast skies are common. Wear: Light puffer jacket or thick coat, long trousers, knit top, thin gloves, and always carry an umbrella.

April

Spring scenery begins to emerge, but it remains cool with average lows of 4°C and highs of 14°C, and significant daily temperature swings. Flowers start to bloom and sunny spells increase, but sudden showers are frequent. Wear: Layering is key — a thin long-sleeve base, a cardigan or light fleece, and a waterproof outer layer. Keep an umbrella on hand at all times.

May

Warmth arrives in earnest, with average lows of 8°C and highs of 19°C. Lake Zurich’s shores are in full bloom and outdoor activities are in full swing, though mornings and evenings can still be cool. Wear: Thin long-sleeve tops, jeans, and a lightweight windbreaker as your base, with a compact umbrella for rain.

June

One of the best months to visit, with average lows of 12°C and highs of 23°C and over 15 hours of daylight. T-shirts are fine during the day, but evenings cool off, and rain falls on around 11 days per month. Wear: T-shirts and light trousers during the day; add a thin jacket or sweater in the evening. Carry a waterproof layer in your bag.

July

The hottest month, averaging 14°C at night and 24°C during the day. Locals fill the Limmat and Lake Zurich for open-air swimming. Sunny days are plentiful, but brief afternoon downpours are common. Wear: T-shirts, shorts, and sandals. Sunglasses, a hat, and sunscreen are essential due to strong UV. Pack a light puffer if heading into the mountains.

August

Very similar to July, with average lows of 13°C and highs of 24°C. Rain is slightly more frequent than July, falling on around 12–13 days per month. Wear: Summer outfits (T-shirt and shorts) with a spare long-sleeve layer; bring a compact umbrella and sunscreen.

September

The transition between summer and autumn, with comfortable average lows of 10°C and highs of 19°C. Daytime warmth lingers but temperatures drop steadily, especially in the second half of the month. Wear: Thin long-sleeve tops, jeans, and a light autumn jacket, with an extra layer for cool evenings.

October

Temperatures fall rapidly as autumn foliage peaks, averaging 6°C at night and 14°C during the day. Rainy and foggy days increase, though clear days still offer excellent hiking conditions. Wear: Chunky knitwear or a sweater, an autumn coat, waterproof shoes, and an umbrella.

November

The start of serious winter, with average lows of 2°C and highs of 8°C. Fog is frequent, the air is damp, and the first snowfall of the season can arrive. Wear: Heavy puffer or wool coat, insulated boots, gloves, and a scarf.

December

The city glows with Christmas markets and festive lights, but temperatures average -1°C at night and 4°C during the day, with frequent snow. Wear: Heavy down parka, waterproof insulated boots, gloves, a warm hat, and a scarf. Hand warmers are highly recommended.
