There are many flights connecting to major airports throughout Europe.

From the airport, you can travel to Venice by taxi, bus, water taxi, and other means of transportation.

Taxi

The land taxis available at Marco Polo Airport are operated by Cooperativa Artigiana Radiotaxi, and there is a taxi application desk in the arrival lobby.

Taxis operate at a fixed rate of €40 from the airport to Piazzale Roma (Venice city entrance point) for up to 4 passengers, with the same rate regardless of time of day.

The journey takes approximately 15-20 minutes and operates 24 hours a day, so you can use it anytime.

After arriving at Piazzale Roma, you can walk to your accommodation or take the Vaporetto (water bus) through the canal to reach your hotel.

You can board at a dock approximately 10 minutes away from the airport arrival terminal and can reach your accommodation while enjoying the view of Venice’s canals – a romantic way to travel.

Since the water bus service departing from the airport is operated by a different company from Venice’s public water bus Vaporetto, a separate ticket is required to use the Vaporetto.

Airport water bus tickets can be purchased at the Alilaguna booth in the airport or online.

Arriving in Venice by Train

Venice is well connected to many Italian cities, and there are overnight trains departing from southern Italian cities.

Many international trains from major European cities also arrive in Venice. Italian train schedules and tickets can be checked online.

Trains departing from the Italian mainland go through Mestre Station (Stazione di Venezia Mestre) on the mainland and terminate at Venice Santa Lucia Station (Stazione di Venezia Santa Lucia) in the western part of Venice.

The two stations should not be confused. If the train terminates at Mestre Station, you can board a train to Santa Lucia (€1.50).

Trains depart about 10 times per hour and take approximately 10 minutes.

From Santa Lucia Station, you can use the Vaporetto water bus (€9.50) or water taxi (€70-80) to reach your hotel or other locations in Venice.

If walking, it takes about 30 minutes to reach San Marco Square.

  • Venice – Verona (1 hour 59 minutes): From €11
  • Venice – Florence (2 hours 13 minutes): From €17
  • Venice – Milan (2 hours 16 minutes): From €23
  • Venice – Rome (3 hours 59 minutes): From €51
  • Venice – Naples (5 hours 22 minutes): From €50

Venice Public Transportation

Venice is built by connecting 118 islands created by driving pilings into a lagoon.

The islands are connected by approximately 400 bridges, making it possible to travel on foot.

From one end of San Marco Island, where major attractions are located, to the other end takes about 1 hour on foot.

Please note that GPS signals are difficult to receive in the narrow alleys between Venice’s stone buildings, so caution is needed when walking.

The main public transportation in Venice is the Vaporetto (water bus), operated by ACTV (Azienda Consorzio Trasporti Veneziano).

Since car traffic is prohibited in Venice and the city is connected by canals, the Vaporetto is the only public transportation method besides walking.

Vaporetto Water Bus (ACTV)

You can explore Venice on foot without cars, but walking all day can tire you.

For long distances or traveling to neighboring islands, you can use the water bus, though water taxis are also available but cost much more.

You can check water bus routes online.

You can purchase water bus tickets at ticket sales counters at terminals, automatic ticket machines, and also online.

Before boarding the water bus, you must validate your ticket at the ticket validator at the departure terminal.

The 75-minute single ticket allows you to transfer to multiple lines within 75 minutes but does not allow you to use it for round-trip travel on the same line.

  • Water bus 1 journey (75 minutes): €9.50
  • Water bus 24-hour pass: €25
  • Water bus 48-hour pass: €35
  • Water bus 72-hour pass: €45
  • Water bus 7-day pass: €65

Gondola

The gondola, a symbol of Venice, is a black boat measuring 11 meters in length and 1.4 meters in width, historically used to transport people and goods along waterways.

Currently it is used mainly for gondola tours rather than as a means of transportation.

Gondola rides are available at fixed rates: €90 for 25-30 minutes during the day and €110 at night (19:00-03:00).

Booking public gondolas online offers more economical rates.

Tourists prefer to board near San Marco Square and the Rialto Bridge, but during peak season you may have to wait a long time, and gondolas may operate near each other.

Venice City Water Taxi (Motoscafo)

Venice’s water taxi (Motoscafo) is a fast and convenient means of transportation, picked up directly from your hotel or designated terminal and traveling non-stop to your destination.

Unlike the Vaporetto, it does not make intermediate stops, making it the optimal choice for travelers with limited time.

You can board taxis waiting at major terminals (Piazzale Roma, Santa Lucia, San Marco, Rialto) or you can make reservations through your hotel reception desk.
