Krabi is a province in southern Thailand, situated on the Andaman Sea. Krabi Town, the provincial capital, sits at the mouth of the Krabi River, surrounded by mangrove forests and dramatic limestone cliffs. Nearby lie some of Thailand’s most celebrated beaches and islands — Railay Beach, the Phi Phi Islands, and Ao Nang — making Krabi the perfect base for island hopping and marine adventures. Inland, the Emerald Pool and natural hot springs add further natural highlights to an already spectacular region.
Krabi is celebrated for its warm, welcoming atmosphere, where locals and international travellers mingle freely. It draws everyone from backpackers to culture enthusiasts, offering affordable guesthouses and vibrant local food markets. The landscape — where limestone cliffs rise from emerald waters — gives the region the feel of a peaceful tropical paradise, though popular beaches pulse with a lively, energetic crowd.

Seasonal Weather & Best Time to Visit
Krabi sits on the Andaman Sea coast in southern Thailand and has a tropical monsoon climate divided into three seasons: the hot season (March–May), the rainy season (June–October), and the dry season (November–February). Year-round average temperatures range between 25–32°C.
Dry Season (November – February)
The dry season is the most comfortable time to visit. Daytime highs reach 31–34°C with cool breezes taking the edge off the heat, while nights cool to 21–23°C. Monthly rainfall is very low at just 30–69mm, meaning plenty of sunny days, and humidity sits at 70–80% — relatively manageable. The sea is calm with water temperatures of 28–29°C, making it ideal for snorkelling, diving, and all water sports. Clear skies deliver vivid sunsets and deep blue water at their photogenic best. Note that the Christmas and New Year period sees significant crowds, so booking accommodation and activities early is essential. Carry a light jacket for cooler evenings, and stay well hydrated and apply sunscreen even in the “cooler” months.
Hot Season (March – May)
The hottest and most humid time of year. Daytime temperatures peak at 29–35°C with nights at 22–24°C, and the intensity of the sun makes the heat feel even more extreme. Monthly rainfall increases slightly to 98–172mm but conditions remain generally dry, while humidity climbs to 80–90%, which can cause fatigue during afternoon activity. Brief showers are common but the overall outlook stays sunny — good conditions for water sports and hiking. The Songkran Festival (April) brings exuberant water-splashing celebrations across the country. Sea temperatures rise to 29–30°C, perfect for swimming, though the dehydration risk is high — plan indoor activities during the hottest midday hours. Accommodation prices are more stable in this pre-peak window, and natural scenery remains beautiful — though climate change is contributing to increasingly extreme heat events.
Rainy Season (June – October)
The rainy season brings frequent heavy rain under tropical monsoon conditions, making it the low season for tourism. Daytime temperatures remain at 31–32°C and nights at 22–24°C, but the rain provides some relief from the heat. Monthly rainfall ranges from 193–324mm, with the heaviest downpours concentrated in September and October. Humidity soars to 85–95%, increasing mosquito activity. Rain typically arrives as intense afternoon showers that clear quickly — however, typhoons and flooding can cause ferry cancellations, restricting island access, and overcast skies limit beach activities. The upside: accommodation and flights are 30–50% cheaper, tourist sites are far less crowded, and the post-rain air and lush greenery are genuinely beautiful. Travel insurance and an umbrella are strongly recommended; temple visits and yoga classes make excellent alternatives to beach days.
Best Time to Visit Krabi
Peak Season: November – February
The dry season is peak season, with the period from mid-December to mid-January (over Christmas and New Year) being the absolute high point. Daytime temperatures average 30–33°C with cool breezes, rainfall is low (50–100mm/month), and long sunny days with calm seas make this ideal for beach activities of every kind. Clear skies, photogenic scenery, and lively festive events make this the period with the highest traveller satisfaction — but also the most crowds and the highest prices. Accommodation, ferries, and tours can cost 20–50% more, and popular spots will be busy. Book well in advance, especially for December–January.
Low Season: May – October
The rainy season is low season. Temperatures remain warm (29–32°C days, 23–26°C nights), but rainfall is high (200–400mm/month), humidity reaches 85–95%, afternoon showers are the norm, and September–October brings typhoon risk. The advantages are significant for budget travellers: accommodation and tours are 30–50% cheaper, and popular sites are refreshingly uncrowded. The disadvantage is the risk of cancelled ferries, flooding, restricted beach activity, and increased mosquitoes.

The songthaew — a converted pick-up truck with bench seating — is Krabi’s main form of local transport. They run fixed routes but will stop anywhere along the way if you flag them down. Currency & Money Exchange
Thailand’s currency is the Thai Baht (THB, ฿). Exchange offices are widely available in both Krabi Town and Ao Nang Beach. When exchanging cash locally, larger denominations (e.g., 100 USD bills) typically attract better rates; compare rates between exchange booths and bank branches before transacting. ATM withdrawals are a convenient alternative — look for bank-branded ATMs for the best rates, and be aware that Thai ATMs generally charge a fixed withdrawal fee of around 220 THB per transaction, so withdraw larger amounts at once to minimise costs.
