Yanji (Yanbian) has a temperate humid monsoon climate with four distinct seasons. Spring is dry and windy, summer (June–August) is relatively warm with concentrated rainfall — accounting for about 60% of the annual precipitation of 400–650mm. Autumn is short and refreshingly cool, while winter is long and brutally cold, with January average temperatures dropping to -13.6°C and lows reaching -18.7°C. The average July temperature is a pleasant 21.5°C, and the annual average is around 5.7°C. The best time to visit is generally June through September.

Seasonal Weather Overview

Spring (March – May)

Spring arrives late in Yanji. March still carries sub-zero temperatures, with strong northwesterly winds and very dry air. From mid-April, temperatures rise quickly and warm days appear, but unpredictable cold snaps return just as suddenly. Large day-to-night temperature swings persist through late May, making a light jacket essential at all times. Throughout spring, rainfall is scarce and dust storms periodically blow in from the northwest.

Summer (June – August)

Summer in Yanji is surprisingly cool and comfortable. The average July temperature sits at 21.5°C, with daytime highs rarely exceeding 29°C — prolonged heat waves are uncommon. About 60% of annual rainfall falls during this wet season in the form of short, intense showers. Humidity remains relatively low, so stepping into the shade feels noticeably refreshing. By late August, nighttime temperatures begin dropping quickly, signaling the approach of autumn. This is also the ideal window for visiting the nearby Changbai Mountain (Baekdu Mountain) summit.

Autumn (September – October)

Autumn is brief but stunning. September brings daytime highs of 16–22°C — the most comfortable weather of the year for walking and sightseeing. However, temperatures fall much faster than in other regions, and by October a padded jacket is necessary, with a full-length down coat becoming essential by late October. Early-to-mid October marks peak foliage season, when the mountains around Yanji turn vivid shades of red and gold. Daily temperature swings exceed 10°C, so layering is a must. The first snowfall typically arrives in early November.

Winter (November – February)

Yanji’s winter is long and harsh. By mid-November, daytime temperatures already drop below zero, and the wind-chill effect makes it feel even colder. January is the coldest month, with an average of -13.6°C and lows as cold as -18.7°C. Sub-zero midday temperatures are common, and with strong northwesterly winds, the real-feel temperature can fall below -20°C. Precipitation is at its annual low, so skies are often clear, but accumulated snow freezes solid on the roads, making proper winter footwear essential.

Best Time to Visit

Peak Season: June – September

June through September is the undisputed best time to visit Yanji. Average temperatures hover around 20°C, ideal for outdoor activities, without extended heat waves. This is also the only reliably stable window for trekking to the Changbai Mountain crater lake, and most visitors combine both destinations in one trip. Note that airfares and accommodation rates rise 1.5 to 2 times during this period, so booking at least one month in advance is strongly recommended.

Foliage Season: Early–Mid October

Early October is when autumn colors peak, with the mountain ranges around Yanji and Changbai bathed in brilliant reds and yellows. Crowds are thinner than in summer and travel costs are lower, making this a great value season. However, temperatures plunge sharply after mid-October, so a heavy down coat is non-negotiable.

Off-Season: Late April – May

If you prefer a quieter trip at lower cost, late April through May is a solid option. Airfares and hotel rates are at their annual low, and tourist crowds are minimal. Be prepared for unpredictable weather, strong dry winds, and occasional dust storms — a windproof jacket and a dust mask are essential.

Monthly Weather & What to Wear

January

January is the coldest month, with an average of -13.6°C and lows of -17 to -18°C. Midday temperatures frequently stay below -10°C, and strong northwesterly winds push the wind-chill below -20°C. Skies are often clear but roads are dangerously icy.

What to wear: Thermal base layer + thick sweater + long goose-down coat + winter hat + scarf + heavy gloves + insulated winter boots

February

Bitter cold similar to January continues, with average temperatures around -10°C. A slow warm-up begins in late February, but sub-zero temperatures persist. Dry conditions and strong winds remain.

What to wear: Same full cold-weather outfit as January. Add a lighter spare layer for late February.

March

The tail end of winter — daytime temperatures occasionally creep above zero, but mornings and evenings remain below freezing. Dry, gusty winds pick up and dust storms begin to roll in. Temperature swings of 10°C+ between day and night are common.

What to wear: Thermal layer + thick knit sweater + long coat or short puffer + scarf + gloves. A dust mask is essential.

April

Spring begins, though it arrives late. From mid-April, daytime highs reach 10–15°C and occasional warm days appear, only to be followed by cold snaps days later. Morning temperatures remain 0–5°C.

What to wear: Long-sleeve shirt + thin sweater + windbreaker or light coat. Layering is essential given the volatile temperatures.

May

Spring is in full swing, with daytime highs of 15–20°C. Some warm afternoons feel like early summer, but nights can still dip below 10°C. Rainfall gradually increases.

What to wear: T-shirt or light long-sleeve + thin cardigan or windbreaker. A light jacket for evenings is a must. Bring an umbrella or rain jacket.

June

The rainy season officially begins, with temperatures around 20°C. Short but heavy downpours become frequent and humidity rises, though it doesn’t rain all day like a traditional monsoon.

What to wear: T-shirt + thin long-sleeve for evenings. A compact umbrella or rain jacket is essential. Waterproof shoes recommended.

July

The hottest month, with daytime highs around 29°C and occasional peaks above 30°C. Average temperature is 21.5°C. This is the peak of the rainy season with the highest monthly rainfall. Relative humidity stays moderate, so shade feels noticeably cooler.

What to wear: T-shirt + shorts or light trousers. Umbrella or rain jacket is a must. Bring a light layer for air-conditioned indoors.

August

Similar to July, with average temperatures around 22°C. Nighttime temperatures begin to drop by late August, and the rainy season gradually winds down with more clear days appearing.

What to wear: T-shirt + shorts. Add a thin cardigan in the evenings from late August onward. Keep an umbrella handy.

September

Autumn begins and this is the most pleasant month for travel, with daytime highs of 16–22°C. Thin knits and long-sleeve shirts are perfect during the day, while evenings drop below 10°C. Clear, crisp skies make this ideal for outdoor sightseeing and mountain hiking.

What to wear: Long-sleeve shirt + thin knit or cardigan + windbreaker. Add a light coat for evening outings.

October

Foliage peaks as average daytime temperatures fall to around 8°C. A light puffer is needed in early October, while a full-length down coat becomes essential from mid-October onward. Temperature gaps between day and night exceed 10°C, but sunny days are frequent.

What to wear: Early October — thick knit + short puffer + scarf. Mid-October onwards — thermal layer + long down coat + gloves.

November

Severe cold sets in. Average temperatures drop to -2°C and by late November, morning lows fall below -10°C. The first snowfall typically arrives in early-to-mid November. Visiting without proper winter gear is genuinely dangerous.

What to wear: Thermal layer + thick sweater + long down coat + winter hat + scarf + gloves. Waterproof insulated boots are essential.

December

Full winter mode, with temperatures ranging from -5 to -15°C. Rainfall is at its annual minimum and dry conditions persist, but accumulated snow turns into black ice on roads.

What to wear: Same full winter outfit as January–February. Thermal base layer + goose-down long coat + winter hat + heavy gloves + scarf + insulated boots.
