Sanya (三亞), located at the southernmost tip of Hainan Province in China, enjoys a tropical monsoon climate with temperatures ranging from approximately 19°C to 31°C year-round — meaning winter essentially doesn’t exist here. During the dry season from November to April, rainfall is minimal and humidity stays low, with average temperatures hovering between a comfortable 20–27°C.

During the wet season from May to October, temperatures can soar up to 32°C, accompanied by heavy tropical showers and high humidity. While typhoons can occasionally make an impact, the ocean temperature remains swimmable year-round (22–25°C), making Sanya a perfect beach destination in every season.

Sanya’s Weather by Season

Spring in Sanya (March – April)

From March, Sanya welcomes true spring weather with temperatures ranging from a low of 21.9°C to a high of 28.6°C. Rainfall is scarce and skies are clear, making it an ideal time for outdoor activities and water sports. Ocean temperatures rise enough for snorkeling and swimming, though the UV index is strong — sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat are absolute must-haves.

Summer in Sanya (May – August)

The wet season kicks off in May, pushing temperatures up to 32°C alongside significantly higher humidity levels. Tropical downpours typically occur at night, leaving daytimes mostly bright and sunny. Despite the heat and humidity, coastal areas with refreshing sea breezes are still very much enjoyable — and the warm ocean temperatures make late-night swims a real treat.

Autumn in Sanya (September – October)

September still carries the tail end of the wet season, with temperatures peaking around 31°C and some risk of typhoon activity. From October, rainfall drops sharply and temperatures gradually ease, bringing clear, crisp air. Mornings and evenings cool down to around 20°C, while daytime stays warm and pleasant — a great transitional period for sightseeing.

Winter in Sanya (November – February)

November marks the start of the dry season, with rainfall decreasing significantly and sunny days becoming the norm. Even in January — the coolest month of the year — average temperatures stay between 18.5°C and 26.1°C, making it incomparably warmer than a Korean winter. While northern China shivers in the cold, you can stroll Sanya’s beaches in a T-shirt at midday, which is why winter is the most popular season for escaping the cold.

Best Time to Visit Sanya

The best time to visit Sanya is during the dry season from November to April. Rainfall is low, sunny days are plentiful, and comfortable temperatures of 20–27°C make it perfect for beach activities and outdoor exploration.

Note that November through March is peak tourist season, as visitors from northern China flock south to escape the cold — expect higher hotel rates and airfares during this period.

If budget is your top priority, consider visiting in May, early September, or early October. While these months fall in or near the wet season with some risk of typhoons, accommodation and flight prices drop noticeably and crowds are far thinner, allowing for a more relaxed trip. For the ultimate combination of ideal ocean temperature and weather, late February through April is widely considered the best time of the year.

Monthly Weather & What to Wear

January
The coolest month in Sanya, with lows of 18.5°C and highs of 26.1°C. Expect little rainfall and mostly dry, clear days. A light long-sleeve shirt with a casual jacket works well; a thin cardigan or windbreaker is enough for mornings and evenings.

February
Temperatures rise slightly to a low of 19.8°C and a high of 26.8°C. Still in the dry season, though rainfall begins to inch upward. Pack a light jacket and long-sleeve tops, and keep a compact umbrella handy for occasional showers.

March
Spring truly begins, with temperatures ranging from 21.9°C to 28.6°C — warm, pleasant, and perfect for being outside. Occasional showers are possible but brief. Short-sleeve shirts with breathable, lightweight bottoms are the go-to; bring a light long-sleeve for evenings.

April
Tropical warmth sets in as temperatures climb from 24.2°C to 30.7°C. Rainfall begins to increase, signaling the approach of the wet season. Summer clothing (shorts, T-shirts) is the standard — strong UV rays make sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat essential.

May
The wet season begins in earnest. Temperatures range from 25.6°C to 32°C with rapidly rising humidity, and tropical downpours are frequent. Always carry an umbrella. Opt for breathable, sweat-wicking fabrics in short-sleeves and shorts — linen works particularly well.

June
One of the hottest months, with lows of 26.1°C and highs of 31.9°C, paired with very high humidity. Rain is frequent and squalls are common. Ultra-lightweight, breathable clothing is a must; waterproof sandals and a portable umbrella are essential every time you head out.

July
Hot and humid conditions continue, with temperatures between 25.9°C and 31.7°C. Strong sunshine during the day is broken up by sudden rain showers. Stick to lightweight short-sleeves and shorts, and use both a hat and umbrella for sun and rain protection.

August
Typhoon season overlaps with August, making weather unpredictable. Temperatures sit between 25.5°C and 31.4°C. Always check the weather forecast before heading out. Lightweight casual clothing is the base, but pack a light windproof and waterproof jacket for sudden storms.

September
A transitional month as summer fades into autumn, with temperatures of 24.7°C to 31.2°C and lingering typhoon risk. Rainfall starts to taper off, but sudden showers remain common. Short-sleeves are still the norm; add a light long-sleeve layer for evening outings and keep an umbrella on hand.

October
Rainfall decreases noticeably and temperatures ease to 23.4°C–30.2°C, with increasingly clear and refreshing air. The beginning of the dry season brings transparent blue skies ideal for sightseeing. Short-sleeves are fine during the day; bring a light jacket or long-sleeve for mornings and evenings.

November
Firmly in the dry season, with comfortable temperatures of 21.3°C–28.5°C and minimal rainfall — one of the most pleasant months of the year. Clear skies make it ideal for beach activities and outdoor tourism. Short-sleeves during the day and a thin long-sleeve or cardigan in the evenings is all you need.

December
Alongside January, December is one of the coolest months, with lows of 19°C and highs of 26.6°C. Rainfall is very scarce and sunny days are consistent, offering a mild winter that feels nothing like the Chinese mainland. A light long-sleeve shirt paired with a thin jacket or cardigan is perfectly sufficient — heavy winter coats are completely unnecessary.
