Munich International Airport (MUC) is located about 29 km from the city center — specifically Munich Central Station (Hauptbahnhof). There are three main transport options: the S-Bahn (suburban rail), the Lufthansa Express Bus, and taxi or Uber. Regardless of which option you choose, expect the journey to take around 40 to 45 minutes.
Transport Options at a Glance
| Transport | Travel Time | One-Way Fare | Best For |
| S-Bahn (S1 / S8) | ~40–45 min | ~€13.60 | Frequent service, reliable schedules |
| Lufthansa Express Bus | ~45 min | ~€13.00 | Easy luggage storage, no transfers |
| Taxi / Uber | ~40 min | €69–90 | Late-night arrivals, groups |
S-Bahn — Most Recommended Option
The S-Bahn (suburban rail) is the most popular and cost-effective way to get from Munich Airport into the city. Two lines — S1 and S8 — alternate service and both stop at Munich Central Station (Hauptbahnhof) and Marienplatz.
Where to Board
The S-Bahn station is located underground in the Munich Airport Center (MAC), the central building connecting Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. After collecting your luggage, follow the green 🟢 “S” signs inside the terminal and take the escalators or moving walkways down to the platform. You do not need to go outside.
⚠️ Common mistake: Many travelers walk outside first and then try to re-enter. The S-Bahn station is accessible entirely from inside the terminal.
S1 vs. S8 — Which Should You Take?
Both lines stop at Hauptbahnhof and Marienplatz, but they travel through the city in opposite directions. If your destination is the central station or Marienplatz, simply take whichever train arrives first.
| S1 | S8 | |
| Airport → Central Station | ~45 min (14 stops) | ~42 min (14 stops) |
| Airport → Marienplatz | ~50 min (16 stops) | ~38 min (12 stops) |
| City Direction | Westbound (Laim, Hirschgarten) | Eastbound (Leuchtenbergring, East Station) |
| Frequency | Every 20 min | Every 20 min |
| Combined Frequency | ~Every 10 min |
S1 Full Stop List (Airport → City)
Munich Airport → Besucherpark → Neufahrn → Oberschleißheim → Feldmoching → Moosach → Laim → Hirschgarten → Donnersbergerbrücke → Hackerbrücke → Central Station → Karlsplatz → Marienplatz → Isartor → Rosenheimer Platz → East Station
S8 Full Stop List (Airport → City)
Munich Airport → Besucherpark → Ismaning → Unterföhring → Daglfing → Leuchtenbergring → East Station → Rosenheimer Platz → Isartor → Marienplatz → Karlsplatz → Central Station → Hackerbrücke → Donnersbergerbrücke → Hirschgarten → Laim → Pasing → Westkreuz → Herrsching
⚠️ Important Warning for S1 When Returning to the Airport
When riding the S1 back to the airport from the city, the train splits into two sections at Neufahrn station:
- Front carriages → Freising direction
- Rear carriages → Munich Airport (Flughafen München) direction
Always check the platform display board or the screen on the side of the train for “Flughafen” or “Airport” before boarding. If you get into the wrong carriage, you will end up in Freising city center instead.
Operating Hours and Frequency
The S-Bahn runs 24 hours a day, making it a reliable option even for very early or very late flights. During daytime hours (06:00–22:30), S1 and S8 alternate every 20 minutes each, resulting in a combined service of approximately every 10 minutes.
Ticket Types and Fares
Munich’s S-Bahn is operated under the MVV (Munich Transport Association) zone-based fare system. The airport (MUC) falls in Zone M-5, and traveling to the city center (Zone M) requires a 4-zone ticket.
| Ticket Type | Price | Notes |
| Single Ticket | ~€13.60 | One person, one journey |
| Airport City Day Ticket (1 person) | ~€16.30 | Unlimited S-Bahn, U-Bahn, bus & tram all day |
| Airport City Day Ticket (Group 2–5 people) | ~€30.50 | Up to 5 people on one ticket |
💡 Best value tip: If you plan to use public transport around the city on your arrival day, the Airport City Day Ticket (€16.30) is the smarter choice. It costs just €2–3 more than a single ticket, but gives you unlimited travel on all Munich public transport until 6:00 AM the following day.
How to Buy a Ticket
Ticket Machine (Step by Step)
- Locate the yellow or blue MVV ticket machines near the platform entrance in the underground S-Bahn station.
- Select your language (English available).
- Choose “Single Ticket” or “Day Ticket” as your fare type.
- Search for your destination — type “München HBF” for Central Station.
- Confirm the fare and pay by cash or card.
- Once the ticket is printed, you must validate (punch) it before boarding.
By App
- DB Navigator (German Rail official app): Purchase a digital ticket and board using the QR code — no punching required.
- MVV App: Search destinations and buy tickets directly.
How to Validate (Punch) Your Ticket
Germany’s S-Bahn uses an open platform system with no ticket barriers. Instead, inspectors board trains randomly to check tickets. If you have a printed ticket but fail to validate it, you will be treated as a fare evader and face an on-the-spot fine of €60 or more.
How to validate:
- Before going down to the platform, find the small blue validation machine near the escalators.
- Insert your ticket into the slot — it will stamp the date and time with a click.
- Remove the ticket. You’re ready to board.
Note: Digital tickets purchased via the DB Navigator app or certain day tickets do not require punching. Always check the instructions on your ticket.
Lufthansa Express Bus — Best for Travelers with Heavy Luggage
The Lufthansa Express Bus runs directly from Munich Airport to Central Station with no transfers required. It has generous luggage storage space and offers free onboard Wi-Fi, making it a comfortable option if you are traveling with large suitcases.
Key Stops
Munich Airport Terminal 2 → Airport Center (MAC) → Terminal 1D → Nordfriedhof → Munich Central Station (Hauptbahnhof)
Timetable
| Direction | First Bus | Last Bus | Frequency |
| Airport → Central Station | 06:30 | 22:30 | Every 20 min |
| Central Station → Airport | 05:15 | 20:00 | Every 20 min |

- Adult one-way: ~€12–13
- Round-trip: ~€19.30

Tickets can be purchased online in advance (via Klook or GetYourGuide) or paid on the bus.
Taxi and Uber — Best for Late-Night Arrivals and Groups
Taxis are available 24 hours a day from the arrivals level at both terminals. Uber can be booked via the app, with pick-up from designated ride-hailing zones at the airport.
Estimated Fares
| Service | Estimated Fare | Travel Time |
| Regular Taxi | €75–90 | ~40 min |
| UberX | ~€69 | ~34 min |
| UberXL (up to 6 people) | from ~€53 | ~34 min |
- Taxi base fare starts at €3 for the first 3 km, then approximately €2 per km after that.
- For groups of 3 or 4, splitting a taxi or Uber can actually be more economical per person than public transport.
- From July 2026, Munich will introduce a minimum fare of €5.13 for Uber and Bolt rides.
